Keeping your software up to date is one of the most important things you can do to maintain the security of your Mac. That includes installing all available macOS software updates, including security updates and the background updates described in this article.
Automatic security updates
Some critical security updates for your Mac are released as automatic updates. Your Mac checks for these updates daily, and when an automatic security update is available, it installs automatically and displays a notification.
Turn off automatic security updates
If you would like to always manually download and install security updates, you can set System Preferences to do so.
In System Preferences, click the App Store icon, and deselect these options:
If you deselect these options, you also turn off automatic checks for all software updates. To check for software updates, open App Store on your Mac, then click Updates in the App Store toolbar.
macOS Mojave updates improve the stability, performance, or compatibility of your Mac and are recommended for all Mojave users. To get these updates, choose System Preferences from the Apple menu , then click Software Update. Learn more about updating the software on your Mac.
For details about the security content of these updates, see Apple Security Updates.
